AI visibility: what the search data says about a category that barely existed a year ago

4 September 2026 · Updated 14 September 2026 · 6 min read · SYNECT LIMITED, Dublin

AI visibility is the question of whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overviews name your brand when someone asks them what to buy. A year ago the volumes were a fraction of what they are now. We wanted to know how much had changed, so instead of quoting someone else’s blog post we pulled the data.

Everything below comes from a single DataForSEO pull on 4 September 2026: Google Ads Search Volume, DataForSEO Labs (keyword difficulty, keyword suggestions, search intent) and Google Trends. Volumes are twelve-month averages for the United States unless stated; the Google Trends figures are worldwide. If you are reading this months later, re-pull before you rely on it; this is a snapshot of a market moving fast enough that the snapshot is the point.

The demand, in one table

Fourteen terms from the same buying conversation. “KD” is DataForSEO’s keyword difficulty, 0–100, a model of how hard it is to reach the top ten organic results, where higher is harder. CPC is what advertisers currently bid.

The full suggestion cluster around ai visibility runs to 47 terms. The table is the head of it.

Three things in that table are unusual together

  • The intent is commercial, not curious. DataForSEO’s intent model puts best ai visibility tools at 97% commercial and generative engine optimization at 88%. These are not people reading about a trend. They are people shortlisting.
  • The bids are high for the volume. USD 25–70 a click, peaking at USD 70.04 for ai visibility tool in the United Kingdom, the highest figure anywhere in our pull. A bid that high implies advertisers expect a high-value customer at the end of it. A bid is a belief, not a receipt.
  • The modelled difficulty is low. KD 8 for llm seo, 9 for best ai visibility tools, 10 for ai visibility tracking tool, 15–21 across most of the rest. High commercial intent, high bids and low modelled difficulty do not usually appear in the same row. That pattern usually means the category is younger than the search behaviour. Bear in mind that difficulty is a model, not a look at who currently holds page one.

Direction: up, and steeply

Year-on-year volume change across the cluster runs from roughly +400% (ai visibility) to +4,700% (ai visibility tracking tool), with ai visibility tool, ai brand visibility tools and ai search visibility tool in between, computed against series that include the anomaly described next. Google Trends agrees on direction: the worldwide twelve-month index for ai visibility averages 44 and touched 100 in the week of 9 August 2026, against an average of 12 for generative engine optimization.

One honest caveat, because it is in our own data. Several of these terms show a single anomalous spike in September 2025: ai visibility tool reads 9,900 for that one month against 260 the month before. We do not know what caused it and we are not going to pretend we do. The percentages above are computed against those series, so treat the direction as solid and the exact multiple as soft. The 2026 months are consistent and are what we would rely on.

Where the demand is not

Ireland. We are a Dublin company, so this was the first thing we checked and the answer was flat. generative engine optimization returns no volume data for Ireland at all, which means below the reporting floor, not necessarily zero; geo seo is 40 a month, answer engine optimization 30, ai seo tool 20. The United Kingdom is a real market: generative engine optimization and geo seo at 1,000 each, ai seo agency at 590. On these numbers Ireland is not a market for this product, and local content is not the lever that would change that. If you sell an AI visibility tool from Ireland, your buyers are somewhere else.

What this data does not tell you

Search volume measures interest, not revenue. Cost-per-click measures what advertisers believe, not what customers pay. A low difficulty score says the organic results are reachable, not that reaching them is quick. And none of it tells you whether any particular tool measures the right thing, including ours.

It also says nothing at all about outcomes. We have published no customer results here because we have none to publish; when we do, they will arrive with the customer’s written consent and a date on them, like everything else on this site.

The method, so you can repeat it

  • Volumes and CPC: DataForSEO Google Ads Search Volume, location United States / United Kingdom / Ireland, language en, pulled 2026-09-04. Twelve-month averages with the monthly series retained.
  • Difficulty: DataForSEO Labs Bulk Keyword Difficulty, same date and locale.
  • Cluster size and intent: DataForSEO Labs Keyword Suggestions (full-text match on ai visibility, filtered to volume > 100) and Labs Search Intent.
  • Direction: Google Trends Explore, worldwide, twelve months to 2026-09-04, plus each term’s own year-on-year field from the volume pull.
  • One limitation worth knowing: Google Ads clusters synonyms onto a shared figure, so identical values in adjacent rows may be one measurement rather than two. Nothing in this post is summed. An absent volume field means below the reporting floor, not zero.

Two things here you can check rather than take on trust. The sample report is SynectGEO's own report, with other businesses' names left out (no signup needed); in your own report every cell opens the AI answer behind it, and the Google AI Overview section shows when it is switched on for your workspace. And how the score is built explains what the number can and cannot carry, including when it refuses to produce one.

The short version

People are searching for AI visibility in commercial quantities, the twelve-month direction is up on every term we pulled, advertisers are paying real money for the clicks, and the modelled difficulty scores are still low. That combination is a window rather than a permanent condition, and a difficulty score is a model, not a look at who holds page one.
